Now in it’s 42nd year, the Nove Colli (the nine hills) has become one of the most popular sportive events in Europe. From humble beginnings in 1971, when at 5am, outside their local meeting point, seventeen riders began the very first 'Audax Brevetto Appenninico di km200', to what it is today, with over 10,000 riders taking part over the two distances.
Starting in the small fishing port of Cesenatico, famous for its connections with Marco Pantani, the route heads inland for either 200 or 130 kms, covering 9 or 4 hills respectively. Although none of the climbs are long, (compared to the Alps and Dolomites), even 9kms can feel a huge task when the percentage gradients hit the 18% mark, and many a rider has underestimated the challenge of the nine hills. However, it is also one of the most beautiful countryside areas of Italy and the route passes quite a few famous Italian vineyards whilst a view of San Marino reminds us of the historic background of the region.
The area is also popular with the Giro d\\\'Italia, and many of the climbs have featured in recent years despite the sportive often being scheduled at the same time as the Giro. On occasions this makes it possible to extend the visit to the Nove Colli and take in some of the Giro (details of this possibility will be confirmed when the Giro route for 2012 is announced).
For 2012 we will be staying just to the south of Cesenatico, in the Valverde area, a few hundred yards from the finish line of the event, and surrounded by bars and cafes, ideal for the post race analysis…. or a few pints and a pizza.
The hotel is also a few minutes ride form the start line and registration, making it the ideal location.
